Bangladesh Solar: Policy Incentives Roll Out
The client chose this time to enter the Bangladesh market precisely because of unprecedented policy support. Net metering incentive: from September 1, 2026, rooftop solar users compliant with the Net Metering Guidelines 2025 can receive BDT 10.50/kWh for excess power fed into the grid, valid until February 2030. The cost cap for storage-equipped systems is BDT 8/kWh, which together with margins and premiums forms the feed-in tariff. Import duty exemption: import duties, regulatory duties, supplementary duties, and advance taxes on core equipment including solar modules, inverters, lithium batteries, storage systems, and mounting structures have all been reduced to 0%, valid until June 2031. Income tax for solar projects is 0% until June 2035. In addition, Bangladesh has established a $123 million dedicated fund for financing rooftop solar and other renewable energy projects. The national target is 10,000 MW of solar power in five years, prioritizing rooftop solar with storage. Previously, the combined import tax rate on solar modules was about 26.2%, inverters 37%, and mounting structures up to 58.6% – now all are duty-free. A market set to leap from about 1.5GW today to the 10,000 MW level is rapidly taking shape.
